The process usually begins with careful surface preparation. For steel structures, this typically means removing rust, oil, and any previous coatings via abrasive blasting or thorough cleaning to ensure good adhesion of the intumescent material. The steel is often treated with a suitable primer, which may be specified by the manufacturer. This primer helps protect the surface from corrosion and prepares it for the Intumescent Coating application, ensuring a long-lasting and effective protection system.
 

Once the surface is prepared and primed, the intumescent paint is applied. This can be done using a spray gun for larger surfaces, or with rollers and brushes for smaller or more detailed areas. The paint is applied in several layers to achieve the required dry film thickness (DFT). Thickness is carefully monitored using specialized gauges to ensure the correct thickness is achieved.
 

After application, the coating is allowed to cure, which may be a simple air-drying process or may require more specific conditions. During the curing period, inspections are carried out to check the uniformity and thickness of the intumescent layer. If the intumescent system will be exposed to weather or require aesthetic finishing, a topcoat is often applied. This topcoat provides additional durability and design.
